In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in metabolism and increasing excitement about the phenotypic insights that can be gleaned by monitoring metabolite levels in biological systems. Promoting these trends has been the emergence of metabolomics as a widely used platform to profile metabolites in research specimens. With new advances in metabolomic technologies, particularly those related to MS, metabolites can be measured from minimal amounts of sample with high-throughput and unprecedented sensitivity. The application of these technologies has contributed to our understanding of a vast number of cellular processes, including those associated with cancer, diabetes, heart disease and chronic pain.
